How to check the temperature sensor in the washing machine?
Temperature sensor - a special device, which controls the heating of water in the drum. It monitors the desired temperature and turns off the heater in time to save energy. If your appliance suddenly stops heating water or spends too much time on it, perhaps, it is in this sensor. Let's find out, how to check the operation of the temperature sensor in the washing machine.
Location of the sensor in the washing machine
Functionality check
To check the temperature sensor, it is necessary to provide access to it. To do this, turn off the washing machine and turn off the water supply. Next you will have to dismantle the outer panel and some internal parts. The easiest way is to remove the thermistor from the system, since it is located directly in the Shadow. In popular models, such as Indesit and Samsung, the temperature sensor is installed at the bottom of the system.
To dismantle the thermistor is required:
- remove the rear panel of the machine;
- disconnect the temperature sensor from the wires;
- loosen the fastening of the ten;
- remove the thermistor from the system.
After dismantling the sensor, you need a multimeter, to measure resistance. This is done as follows:
- Adjust the multimeter and get ready to check the resistance.
- Connect the probes of the device to the contacts of the temperature sensor. Remember, that when the temperature reaches twenty degrees, the resistance should not be higher 6000 Ohm.
- Lower the temperature sensor into the water and closely monitor the multimeter readings. If the sensor works properly, his resistance will begin to decline. In water at a temperature of thirty-five degrees, it will reach the mark 1350 Ohm.
Importantly! If you find a sensor failure, replace it with a new one immediately. This part cannot be repaired, and in a faulty condition can lead to breakdowns.
Common breakdowns
Most often, these sensors fail copper tube, which acts as a conductor of freon. As a result, the functionality of the sensor is violated, and have to replace the part with a new one. Having bought a new spare part, install it in place failed.
External signs of sensor problems can take the following forms:
- washing with any mode and arbitrarily selected temperature is still carried out in boiled water;
- the outer panels of the washing machine become very hot during operation, steam may swirl from the loading hatch.
The presence of these features means the urgent need to replace the heating control device. Continued operation of the machine with the sensor not working can lead to serious damage to the entire system or burnout of the heater. Replacing a failed TEN will be quite troublesome and expensive.
Different types of temperature sensors
Modern models often install one of three types of sensors:
- gas filling;
- bimetallic;
- thermistor.
They differ primarily in device and features when replacing.
Gas filling
This type of sensor is constructed of two parts. One of them is made in the form of a round log the size of 20 -30 millimeters. This part is located inside the tank and measures the temperature of the water in contact with it. The second part of the gas-filled sensor is made in the form of a hollow tube of copper. It is connected to an external temperature controller, which is built into the program control panel.
The internal space of the sensor is filled with freon. When exposed to high temperatures, it expands, provoke the closure of contacts, connected to the heater.

Bimetallic
This device is made in the form of the same tablet, as the first. Inside this part is a bimetallic plate, bending under the influence of temperatures. This causes the contacts to close and the water to stop heating.

Thermistor
Now the third type of temperature sensors is gaining popularity, namely the thermistor. Made in the form of a cylinder with a diameter 10 millimeters, it is installed directly on the heater. He works on the principles of changing resistance, and its main advantage is a simple replacement.
Remember, that the temperature sensor is an important part of the washing machine. Timely replacement of worn parts and compliance with preventive measures can save you from expensive repairs and extend the life of your machine.
