Vices with your own hands: video, Photo, drawings of homemade vices
It is easy to make reliable and convenient in work vices the hands. The need for this may be due not only to the desire to save on the purchase of a serial model, but also the need to use a clamping device, which will allow to solve problems more effectively, which are entrusted to him.
Simple homemade vices from the corners
Serial models of vices, although they are universal, not always able to provide high accuracy of fixing parts, they are quite bulky and of considerable weight.
Homemade vices, used mainly in the home workshop, can be made more suitable for certain technological operations, so, more efficient and convenient.
Homemade metalwork vices may differ little from the factory in appearance, and reliability
Anyone, who spends a lot of time in his home workshop, will confirm, what to do in it without such a device, like lentils, quite difficult. Without a clamping device, it is difficult to perform various operations with metal parts, wood and plastic. The use of vices guarantees not only high accuracy and efficiency of drilling operations, milling, etc., But also the safety of the machine operator. If there is no desire or opportunity to buy a serial model of such a device, then it is quite possible to make a vise with your own hands, spending very little time and effort on it.
Homemade metalwork vices: option №1
Excellent strong metalwork vices can be made independently from profile pipes. Presented below ??detailed instructions in the format of a photo collection, supplemented by detailed video. Unfortunately. video in English, but this is unlikely to prevent a competent master from understanding the essence of the process.

Instructions for making vices: option №2
Homemade vices do not require complex design and calculations. You can use numerous photos and drawings of such devices, which are easy to find online. Quite simple, but at the same time a very efficient design is created on the basis of metal pipes.
As you know, pipes, used for mounting water- and gas pipelines, are issued with such calculation, that the product of a certain diameter is tightly included in the pipe of the next standard size. This feature of pipes allows to use them for such device, as self-made metalwork vices. Visual drawing, photos and descriptions of the manufacturing process will help to make these vices yourself.
Drawings of homemade vices. Below are two photos with the finished product
Constructive elements, which will consist of homemade vices, is:
- a piece of metal pipe, which will act as the inner moving part of the device;
- a piece of metal pipe of the following size, which will serve as the outer fixed part;
- running nut with a diameter of a carving of M16;
- running screw with a thread diameter of M16;
- collar, due to which the propeller will be informed of the rotation;
- front and rear supports, due to which the fixed pipe will be fixed on the base;
- rectangular pipe segments (future clamping jaws vise);
- two lock nuts with thread diameters M16 and M18.
The two main parts of the vise (movable and immovable)
Making such vices with your own hands starts with that, that to the end face of a segment of a pipe of bigger diameter, which will act as a fixed element, weld the flange. A nut with M16 thread must be welded into the central hole of the flange. A flange with a central hole is also welded to the end of a segment of a movable pipe of smaller diameter., in which the lead screw will be passed.
At some distance from the edge of the lead screw to it is welded nut M18 (it will become a fixing element). Then the end of the lead screw, to which the nut is welded, it is necessary to pass through the inner part of the movable pipe and insert it into the hole in the flange. The nut should press against the flange on the inside.
Vices assembled (in the photo they have a clamped hammer)
At the end of the lead screw, which protruded from the outside of the flange, the washer is put on and the M16 nut is screwed, which is then welded to the screw. Between the inner nut and the flange surface must also be installed ??washer, which is necessary to reduce the friction force. To properly perform this stage of making homemade vices, it is better to focus on the relevant video.
Once the moving node of the vise is assembled, it should be inserted into a fixed pipe of larger diameter and screw the other end of the lead screw into the nut of the second flange. To connect the lead screw to the collar, to its end, protruding from the side of the moving pipe, you can weld a nut or washer, in the holes of which the collar will be passed.
Clamping jaws of such vices can be made from segments of rectangular pipes, which are welded to moving and stationary parts. To give the structure stability, two supports are welded to the lower part of the fixed pipe, as which corners or rectangular pipes can be used.
The inner tube can also rotate during the rotation of the lead screw, which makes the use of such vices very inconvenient. That this did not happen, a longitudinal slit can be made in the upper part of the fixed pipe, and screw the retaining screw into the moving pipe, which will move along this slot and prevent rotation of the moving part.
Many photos of homemade vices of similar design show the devices, movable and immovable parts of which are made of square or rectangular pipes. The use of such pipes also avoids the rotation of the moving part of the vise.
Vices of the described design, the author of which is B. Legostaev, belong to the reliable and effective clamping devices, easy to maintain and repair, which makes them very popular with home builders.
If you do not plan to load the vise too much, then it is possible to make them out of wood according to a simple scheme
How to make carpentry vices yourself
Almost every craftsman has to deal with the processing of wooden products. The need for such treatment may be related to the manufacture of various wooden structures, and with the repair of existing ones. Do this work, using improvised devices with metal clamping elements, not only inconvenient, but also threatens to damage the surface of the wooden part, the appearance of dents and cracks on it. That is why it is best to use carpentry vices for wooden products. It is also easy to make them with your own hands.
Homemade vices with wooden guides
As in the case of metalwork vices, find drawings online, photos and even videos of making such devices will not be particularly difficult.
The simplest design of self-made joiner's vices consists of the following elements:
- solid wooden bar body, which also serves as a fixed clamping sponge;
- movable sponge made of wooden bars;
- cylindrical guides made of metal, behind which the moving sponge will move;
- lead screw, which ensures the movement of the movable sponge;
- crank, by means of which the running screw is informed of rotation.
Device of joiner's vices
The body of such vices, on which metal guides are fixed, fastened to the surface of the machine with long screws or bolts. And in the case, and in a movable sponge of the clamping device it is necessary to make three openings - for guides and the running screw. It is best to drill such holes in both bars at the same time, so that they are located exactly relative to each other.
Fastening of vices from below the machine
Once the guides are fixed in the housing, a movable clamping sponge is put on them. Then a screw is inserted into the central hole of both bars, on which the nut is screwed with the reverse part of the case. At the other end of the screw, which protrudes beyond the front surface of the movable sponge, it is also necessary to screw and weld the nut. To secure the collar to the front end of the lead screw, a hole of the corresponding diameter is drilled in the screw (or a nut is welded to it).
The photo shows the principle of assembly of such vices
Such vices work as follows: rotating, the lead screw is screwed into the nut, fixed on the back of the support, thereby drawing a movable clamping sponge to it.
The vise is mounted on the machine and ready to work
So, making metalwork and carpentry vices for the home workshop does not require any special skills, no search for hard-to-reach components.
