Belt grinder: construction, purpose and options for making your own hands

No home craftsman can do without hand power tools. But sometimes the time comes, when such a tool is not enough, and need the help of serious equipment. So, example, the belt grinder is capable to process surfaces of big details. Industrial units are too expensive, so many craftsmen make grinders with their own hands.

Design of belt grinder

Wood is widely used for the manufacture of various products and parts. To process the wood blank properly, different equipment is used. Careful high-precision woodworking is performed on belt sanders, which as a working body have an abrasive tape.

In the design of the grinding unit are provided:

  1. Abrasive tape, which can be located horizontally or vertically. It is installed on the frame and placed between the rotating drums.
  2. Leading and driven drums. The rotation of the drive drum is due to the electric motor, which transmits torque through the belt drive. Rotation speed of the leading element, hence the speed of the belt can be adjusted by specially set modes of surface treatment.
  3. The equipment table can be wooden or metal. On the basis made of metal it is possible to sharpen more difficult preparations.
  4. The electric motor should have a power of about 2,8 kW and be able to provide the tape with a normal speed up to 20 meters per second.
  5. A special mounting hood must be installed for this purpose, so that during the technological process it is possible to remove the dust formed during operation.

The length of the machine and its working tool depends on the length of the products, which will be processed on it. It is much more convenient to work with blanks, which have a shorter length, than the work surface.

Why do you need grinding machines?

Usually, the equipment is used for finishing mechanical processing of products at the final stages of production. Belt grinders can work like wood, and with metal.

Wood equipment is able to finally level the surface, remove roughness and unevenness in the form of elevations or depressions, peel off the burrs, grind rounding, do internal grinding, achieve smooth and even product surfaces.

Metal machines work with non-ferrous metals in the form of flat, round and square blanks and with plain and alloy steel. They are able to rationally and in a short time to grind large diameter pipes and logs.

From what to make a bed?

It is best to make a desktop of thick iron. The ideal dimensions of the canvas are 500x180x20 mm. However, the larger the dimensions of the frame, the more options for different parts it can be processed.

A large work surface will be much more comfortable and functional than a small bed. You will need it to make it:

  1. Cut one side of the canvas prepared for the table with a metal milling machine.
  2. Make a markup.
  3. Drill three holes in the end of the cut workpiece.
  4. Use three bolts to secure the work platform to the frame.

Selection and installation of the engine for the machine

The engine from the washing machine can serve as the engine for the unit. If not, then you can pick up the motor, whose rated power will be up to 3 kw, and the intensity of work - about 1500 rpm. The power unit for the grinder should be firmly and securely fixed on the frame.

Leading and driven drums

Such elements for the grinder can be made with your own hands from this material, as particleboard. This is necessary:

  1. Cut out from the sheet of chipboard blanks measuring 200x200 mm
  2. Assemble a thick package from the obtained blanks 240 mm.
  3. Fold everything and grind to the optimal diameter 200 mm
  4. Attach the lead drum to the motor shaft. It will set the tape in motion.
  5. Fasten the driven drum around the station axis on the bearings. At the same time from a drum there should be a special bevel. This will help give the tape a soft touch on the work surface.

Making drums, should be considered, that their diameter of the central part should be a couple of millimeters larger than the outer diameter. This is necessary to ensure the stable operation of the equipment, since the flexible tape will be in the middle of the drum.

Sanding belt with your own hands

As an abrasive tape it is possible to take some emery strips. They will need to be cut into pieces up to 200 mm and glue. The tarpaulin will be an ideal variant of a basis for a cloth.

It is recommended to glue the product with your own hands with a quality product, which will be able to maintain the integrity of the element for a long time.

Some craftsmen recommend covering the rollers with rubber. You can use cameras from mopeds or bicycles. The thickness of the rubber layer should be close 30 mm.

Having collected from all selected elements a design, you can safely start woodworking.

Grinding machine with manual grinder

Based on a hand grinder, other parts of the equipment can be made with your own hands from chipboard, pine and birch bars. U-shaped accent is glued with PVA glue, other elements of the unit are connected by screws.

The basis of the machine can be two hinged pieces of chipboard. For greater strength, the hinges are fastened with M6 bolts.

The grinder is installed to the base with the help of bars, which are pre-adjusted to the shape of the body and glued on top of pieces of rubber.

In front of the grinder is attached to the appropriate size furniture confirmations. With their help the grinding plane can be set in the right position.

Behind the base of the machine is attached with a bar and two screws. That the persistent platform with a grinding plane was on one line, pieces of soft rubber can be glued to the body.

In the horizontal part of the U-shaped stop you can make a groove to move the small carriage, which may be needed to sharpen the blades of the electric planer.

After fixing and adjusting the grinder, the machine can be operated.
