Drain pipe elbow: types and main characteristics
The drain pipe elbow is a tubular element, bent at a certain angle. This detail is an integral part of almost any gutter structure and performs the function of enveloping various architectural obstacles. To date, there are several options for drainage elbows. This product may also differ in material of manufacture.
The elbow for the gutter is an element, used to bend the gutter at the right angle
Scope of the drain pipe elbow
The gutter knee may have a different bending angle, but the most common are models with angles in 45, 60, 90 °. This element is used to join the funnel, which collects precipitation, with gutter, located in the vertical plane.
pay attention! In some cases (when using a wall gutter) the funnel is connected directly to the pipe. This installation option is considered the most acceptable. It has to do with that, that at such installation the risk of clogging of the drainage channel is reduced as much as possible.
However, most often the gutter is fixed to the rafters. The drain pipe in this case is located very close to the wall, namely at a distance of 3 to 5 cm. At such arrangement of a drain, to connect it to the catchment funnel in any case will need to use two gutters.
And they are also used to bypass all sorts of obstacles during installation (performances, cornices, etc.. D.). Depending on that, how complex an architectural barrier needs to be circumvented, can be used from 2 to 6 knees.
The drain elbow in the vast majority of cases is used at installation of a drain. If the water flows directly from the drain, then it is found in the immediate vicinity of the walls and, more importantly - the foundation of the building. To increase the distance on the lower part of the gutter set the part of the desired length. Based on this, at least one gutter riser must be installed 3 knees.
Elbows are made for gutters of different materials, including for polymer systems
Types of knees for the gutter
The most common materials for making these shaped elements:
- plastic;
- galvanized steel;
- Stainless Steel.
Depending on the design features of such an element of the drainage system, how the knee can be divided into 2 main types:
- hard;
- corrugated.
The rigid knee is unchanged (fixed) angle. As mentioned above, the most common angle options are: 45, 60, 90 °. Hard products are the most common and used everywhere. Their advantages include: mechanical strength, resistance to temperature changes.
The corrugated product is more interesting, from a constructive point of view. The bending point of the device is equipped with movable mechanisms, with which you can easily adjust the angle.
Such products are especially in demand in that case, if many fittings are required to install the gutter structure. The convenience is, that when buying corrugated knee you do not have to deal with the selection of different angles for each fitting. However, the main disadvantage of such a connecting element is the lack of strength. Therefore, the use of corrugated models is recommended only in cases, when justified.
product sizes
In order to choose the right product for a particular case, it is recommended to get acquainted with the main technical characteristics of pipe elbows.
It is important to choose the right size of the knee and the angle of its bend, so that the gutter does not clog with debris
The length of this connecting element, usually, is not more 35 cm (on two sides). If the distance from the wall to the cornice is greater - use an additional element of the pipeline, which allows you to easily make the right connection at a certain angle. This installation resembles a designer's assembly and is very convenient. By means of such installation it is possible to wrap various, even complex, obstacles without much effort.
Importantly! Determining the length of a segment is not so difficult: you need to calculate the distance between the wall and the cornice (at the right angle). exept this, do not forget about the intersection of the gutter and drain pipe.
Details are made for plastic gutters, having all standard indicators of section: 100, 150 etc.. D. The same applies to the elements of drainage systems, which are made of galvanized or stainless steel. exept this, elements of the drainage system can be of non-standard sizes and made to order.
The angle of the knee is selected, guided by two main factors:
- Individual features of a drainage design.
- Minimize the angle, in order not to obstruct the flow of water.
exept this, the smaller the angle, the less likely it is, that debris will clog the gutter. Experts strongly recommend not to use one knee with an angle 90 °. Even if an obstacle in the path of the structure is covered by one such straight knee, it is better to make an envelope of an obstacle by several such elements with the smallest corners.
The method of mounting the knee depends on the material, of which it is made
drain installation
First of all, it is worth knowing, that for performance of normal installation it is necessary to pick up correctly a knee in advance. Consider the phased installation of such a structural element of the drainage system:
- First of all it is necessary to connect a knee with a funnel. It is worth noting, that the knee of the plastic gutter pipe is mounted a little differently. When installing a plastic model, a necessary measure is the installation of a rubber seal ring. By means of this element necessary sealing indicators are reached. The ring of a sealant is fixed by means of special glue.
- The product from galvanized steel is provided on a water intake funnel and is fixed by means of a special collar. The method of its connection with the segment of drainage depends on the variety used.
- Drain, located in the vertical plane, connects to the second knee and is secured with clamps. Further installation of the drain is carried out using special fittings - couplings.
Without such an element, like a knee, when installing a gutter can not do. His choice depends on many factors, one of the main parameters is the diameter.
